New Bible Published to Help Catholics in Scriptural Knowledge

-

A new Bible was designed by Bible scholars to help Catholics “make sense” of the Scripture and change the perception that studying the Scripture is a practice of Protestants.

The Bible comes with tools such as timelines, color coding, as well as scholarly articles to help readers navigate through the Scripture and have a clearer picture of what they’re reading.

Published by Ascension Press, “The Great Adventure Catholic Bible” is designed to make the Bible more accessible to everyday Catholics and encourage Scripture reading on a daily basis, according to Mary Healy, general editor and a Bible scholar. She said many Catholics were not brought up to study the Scripture, with the belief that it is a Protestant practice. This perception is in contrast to what early church fathers taught the Catholic population. “That’s actually a tremendous distortion that would have horrified St. Augustine or St. Thomas Aquinas, any of the fathers of our church or theologians of our history, who recognized Scripture as the Word of God and the soul of theology,” Healy said.

The new Bible features 70 major Biblical events that are arranged in chronological order so Catholics will better understand the narrative throughout the Scripture. It also comes with tools such as timelines, color coding, as well as scholarly articles to help readers navigate through the Scripture and have a clearer picture of what they’re reading.

Jeff Cavins, the author of this new edition, said, “Wouldn’t it be nice to have a Bible that actually explains how to navigate it and make sense of it… a Bible that includes a detailed plan for how to read it with a page layout that’s designed for study and personal devotion? Now, for the first time ever, there is a Catholic Bible that does just that.”

Healy is one of the three women who was appointed to the Pontifical Biblical Commission by Pope Francis. She is also a member of the Pentecostal-Catholic International Dialogue. She is likewise part of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity at the Vatican. Aside from Healy, Cavins worked with other biblical scholars Andrew Swafford and Peter Williamson to create this full-color Bible.

According to Healy, Scriptural knowledge is essential to the mission of evangelization. Without proper knowledge, Catholics will not be able to share the Word of God with other people. She added that this lack of knowledge causes wrong gospels to spread. It’s the equivalent of “fake news” in the world of Christian faith. “In our world today, there is a plague of misinformation, of fake news, but more importantly of deceptions about who we are as human beings, about the meaning of life, about who God is,” Healy said.
