New Virtual Reality Walking Tour Showcases Ancient Jerusalem

Date:

Jerusalem like it was 2,000 years ago through Jerusalem Virtual Reality (VR) Tours: Step into History, the first mobile VR walking tour in Israel.

The tour allows travelers to explore the different aspects of ancient Jerusalem including the religious and commercial activities and experience what archeologists believe the Old City looked like 2,000 years ago. Australian startup Lithodomos VR worked with archeologists from the Israel Antiquities Authority to create 360-degree simulations of how different streets, palaces, citadel, and the ancient Jewish temple believed to look like during the reign of King Herold and during the time of Jesus.

“Especially with Jerusalem, I think the biggest challenge was getting it right,” said Simon Young, founder of Lithodomos VR. “There’s a lot of different opinions about how Jerusalem looked in the ancient world… Of course, we want to do justice to Jerusalem and to make it as accurate as possible.”

The guided walking tour lasts for two and a half hours and is available in both English and Hebrew. It starts at the Tower of David Museum, which is home to Jerusalem’s ancient stronghold, and ends in the Jewish Quarter.

According to Eilat Lieber, Director of the Tower of David Museum, he is excited because with VR technology, the museum can enable visitors to step into and explore Jerusalem.

“The best view of Jerusalem is still from the top of King Herod’s tower built at the Tower of David Museum. However, until now, it took a distinguishing eye and a creative mind to really imagine the city that was.”
