In Japan, a group of Christians flock to the most unlikely place to worship.

Taka Hiroami, the pastor of Praise Community Church in Sendai revealed that church members attend Sunday service in a Japanese/MoTown style bar. The church doesn’t own a building for worship so Hiroami said they found a bar which they could use on Sunday mornings.

He added, “But every Sunday we have a service there, so it’s very, I think, interesting giving impact to people that [ask], ‘Is this church?’ So I think we impact that church is not a building, but church is a community. Church is a relationship.”

“It’s kind of stinky there because every night, 8 o’clock to 3 o’clock in the morning, they open as a bar so many smokers and drinkers…use that space every night,” Hiroami said.

Praise Community Church was founded in 1995 and the congregation has 30 members today. Hiraomi said they have been meeting in the bar since 2007.

Greg, who went to PCC when he was teaching in Japan, shared his unique experience in his blog. He wrote that the church may be meeting in a bar, but the atmosphere there on Sundays was totally different. Instead of focusing on the surroundings, he felt the presence of God.

He was grateful that Pastor Taka worked hard with his sermons. “The other great truth is that the message would be the same whether 5 or 500 people are there. I think Taka would stand up there and give the same effort if there was just one person besides himself showing up,” he wrote.

Pastor Taka disclosed that worshipping in a bar has its own challenges. He hopes that they will be able to find a new building to meet up, a place which is bigger and cleaner.
